    Path to Under 100: Strategies to Safely Lower the Number of Women and Gender-Expansive People in Jail in New York City

    Women and gender-expansive people are uniquely vulnerable to the widespread violence, dysfunction, and lack of access to essential services on Rikers Island. This report contains policy recommendations to safely and effectively reduce the number of these individuals in New York City jails to below 100 in order to achieve the planned closure of Rikers Island by 2027.

    Fact Sheet: Bronx HOPE

    Bronx Heroin Overdose Prevention and Education (HOPE), a new initiative of Bronx Community Solutions, addresses substance use issues with a harm-reduction model at the precinct level. By giving clients the option of accessing community services instead of appearing in court, Bronx HOPE gives Bronx residents the opportunity for rehabilitation and connection to community rather than jail or options that don’t address the underlying issues.

    Addressing Trauma Among School-Aged Children

    School and program staff believed that Margaret’s Place, a trauma-informed program in two New York City public schools, was valued by students and produced positive changes in student coping skills, behavior, and grades. This report documents early program implementation through Spring 2020. Program implementation and evaluation are ongoing; the final report will document the continued efforts (anticipated April 2023).

    Alternative Responses to Intimate Partner Violence in the Era of Pretrial Reform

    Intimate partner violence poses a challenge to jurisdictions weighing the imperative of reducing pretrial detention against potential risks to survivors. Our study of practices across the country found few specialized pretrial alternatives in these cases. Our research brief highlights the handful of specialized practices we did uncover along with recommendations for new approaches. Five case studies and “Notes from the Field” add further context.

    The Tucson City Domestic Violence Court is a high-volume criminal misdemeanor court. The Court specifically provides services and safety for Deaf victims of domestic violence through their partnership with Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse and the Community Outreach Program for the Deaf.

    Veterans Treatment Court Strategic Planning

    In 2019, the Center for Court Innovation received funding from the Bureau of Justice Assistance to assist five states in the development and implementation of statewide strategic plans for their Veterans Treatment Courts (VTC). The selected states were California, Maine, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Each state participated in a needs assessment process that included a document analysis and stakeholder interviews.

    Health, Housing, and Justice Alliance: COVID Response

    As the COVID-19 pandemic forced organizations and institutions to shift to operating remotely, disparities driven by the digital divide became a shared problem across major cross-sector systems important to a community’s well-being. The Health, Housing, and Justice Alliance sought to eliminate inequities of fully virtual legal, healthcare, and social services through the creation of pop-up navigation centers and court hubs throughout Newark, New Jersey.
